Classroom Activities
Activity 1: Write an Editorial
Should the U.S. have entered World War II? After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Senate voted unanimously to declare war on Japan and to enter World War II. In the House, one representative voted against declaring war. Jeannette Rankin, a pacifist, cast the only dissenting vote. Pacifists aim to solve disputes peacefully, without military involvement.
Write a newspaper editorial that either supports or opposes Rankin's position. Consider the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the consequences of the U.S. entering World War II. State your position and provide reasons why you agree or disagree with Rankin. Share your editorial with the class.
