Frequently Asked Question

Getting Started
Why am I having trouble installing this program? You may be trying to install your program on a computer that requires administrative rights to execute such a command. Contact your IT department for assistance, or call our Technical Support team for help.
Why is the program telling me the "admin/admin" log-in is invalid? For Windows: We have a patch that will clear the registry entry for the program and allow you to log in. Please call Technical Support for the patch. For Mac: Go into your hard drive to System\Preferences and you will see a listing for your book Test Generator Preferences. Delete this file and log in again with "admin/admin".
How do I get the books to list properly? Change the data path to include the client data folder. Restart the program and import the book you would like to use.
When I launch the installer, why won't the program move beyond the "Preparing to Install" phase? If you are running on Macintosh OS X or higher, you need to run the program from the Classic operating environment. If this doesn’t work, you may need to contact Customer Service for a replacement CD-ROM. Version 3.3 of the software installs and runs natively on OS X.
I've installed the program. Why can't I find the book? Click on the wsbuilder folder and start the program.
What username and password should I use? Use “admin” for both choices.
After I've installed the program, why is my Windows 98 computer locking up when I try to run the program? Delete the IPS Test folder in the “C” directory. Then search for IPS Test and wsbuilder folder and, if you find anything, delete it. Then reboot and reinstall the program.
What should I do during the installation process when I'm asked for a serial number? Skip it and continue with the installation.
When I tried to install the program, why did I receive the following error message: "error 1327 invalid drive H:"? There may be a conflict with the program Visual Casel. Try reinstalling the program with Visual Casel disabled.
Why are no books listed when I start the program? In the Worksheet Builder section of the program, click on Testbank and Add Testbank. Then open the import folder and double click the book file listed there.
What's the difference between purchasing a site license and networking a program? A site license is the legal right to use software on a number of different computers in a specific location or belonging to a specific group. A customer can purchase a site license for a software program and install the program on a number of systems, based on the terms of the license. Otherwise, the software can only be installed on one computer or used by one user. Below is a list of McDougal Littell products that have a site license available:

Networkability, on the other hand, is a technical issue, not a legal issue. If a product is networkable, it means that, technically, you can run the program off a network. A networkable program allows the user to install the program on a central computer, one time, and that program is then available to other computer terminals in the network. You can have a site license for a program that is not networkable, though -- this means you could install the program on as many computers as you want. Most McDougal Littell technology products are not designed to be networkable, but schools can always try to network them on their own (we have a 30-day trial period to accommodate this type of need). Below is s list of McDougal Littell products that were designed and tested to be networkable:

Troubleshooting
Why are code numbers appearing where the graphics should be on the printed test? There are three printer types listed for this program: HP LaserJet, Epson, or Generic. If you are getting code numbers in place of the graphics, you've chosen the Generic setting, which is meant to be used for old-style daisywheel printers that can't handle graphics. If you have a HP printer, try the LaserJet setting. It works for most LaserJets and DeskJets. If you've got an Epson or Canon printer, try the Epson setting.
On Mac OS X, when I try to create a worksheet, why does it say that no books are found? You may have your data located in the wrong folder. Try changing the data path to client data. If this doesn’t work, contact your school IT department to resolve a potential administrative rights conflict, or contact our Technical Support department for help.
How do I add an item to a new worksheet and turn the number back to “1”? Drag the question over from the testbank to the new worksheet and the number will change.
Why do I receive the following error when I try to install on a Windows 98 machine: "Component move data font file group c:\windows"? Try to install the program in Safe Mode. If you are unsure how to do this operation, call our Technical Support department for help.
How do I get the books to list properly? Change the data path to include the client data folder. Restart the program and import the book you would like to use.
I installed the Worksheet Builder from the CD-ROM. Why doesn't anything happen when I click on the launch icon? Go to your “C” drive, open the wsbuilder folder, and locate the “tester.exe” file. Double-click the file to launch the program. If this doesn’t work, delete the folder and re-install the program.
I don't see the book that I want to use. What should I do? Click Library and switch books.
How do I save tests to a different location? There is no way to save tests to a different location. However, you can back up your client data folder to save the information, including book, test, student, and grade information. There is also a Test Question Edit feature in the program. Double-click the question on the left-hand site and hit the Edit button. A Question Editor screen appears and you can change any aspect of the question you wish; save it and drag the question to the test on the right. That question becomes part of the testbank for future use.
Why do the multiplication signs appear incorrectly after making a quiz? Put the symbol fonts back into the Fonts folder.
Why am I having problems downloading state standards into a worksheet? We recently discovered this issue and are preparing the files needed to fix it. Check back here to download the corrected files or contact the Technical Support team and we will e-mail them to you.
Why doesn't the reporting feature give me all the students on one page? Export the data to Excel and then manipulate the data from this point.
The program was working before, but why does printing now cause the program to shutdown? There may be a conflict with the newly upgraded Service Pack 2 for Windows. Back-up all your tests and reinstall the program.
I deleted my book from the program by mistake. What should I do? Start the program, go into Worksheet Building, click on Testbank and Add Testbank. Double click on the Import folder, and you will see your book listed. Highlight it and click OK. This will add the book back into the program.
