Frequently Asked Question

Getting Started
How can I import questions? Go to Help and open the importing instructions file, which will detail the process for you.
Why can't I find the book I want to use? Make sure you are running Test Generator from your hard drive, not from the CD. If the program is installed properly and there are still no books, check if you have an Update CD. Update CDs will upgrade Test Generator to a newer version, but they do not contain books themselves. You will need to install the older version first, then install the Update CD.

Important note: users of version 6.0 can download books under the "Help" menu.
What should I do if my Test Generator does not work with my school's proxy server? Please download the update in the downloads section of this page and follow the proxy server instructions available in the "McDougal Littell Test Generator" folder.
I am running Mac OS 10.4.6. Why do the pop-up menus sometimes hide so that I can no longer access them? Please update your Java to the most recent version. Go to the Apple menu and select \ldblquote Software Updates\rdblquote.
I am running Mac OS 10.1.5. Why does the program sometimes behave erratically? The most recent Java program used to create Test Generator version 6 is not fully compatible with this operating system, and users may experience font, table, and other irregularities within the program. Please upgrade your operating system to at least 10.2.8 to enjoy the full functionality of the program.
Troubleshooting
Why I'm getting a "javaw.exe" error when I try to run the program? This problem only occurs on Pentium IV machines. Go into the "c:/program files/test gen/jre12/bin/" folder and delete the "symcjit.dll" file. Restart the program.
Why won't the program print properly? Some printers do not work well with this program. Use the file menu to export the text to a .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) file. You can then print the test in Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have the program, download it from www.adobe.com.
Why isn't the first page of my test printing? Download the latest version of Test Generator by selecting the appropriate link located above. Please remember to back-up any tests you may have created.
When I start the program, why do I see a black DOS box, then it disappears and nothing else happens? Download the latest version of Test Generator by selecting the appropriate link located above. Please remember to back-up any tests you may have created. Or, do a search on your hard drive for the file "symcjit.dll". Right click on the file, select Rename. Delete the .dll extension and replace it with .old. Restart the program.
On a Pentium IV, why does the program close upon start-up or not start at all? Download the latest version of Test Generator by selecting the appropriate link located above. Please remember to back-up any tests you may have created. Or go into "c:/program files/testgen/jre12/bin/" or "jre117", depending on the program version, and rename from "symcjit.dll" to "symcjit.old". Restart the program.
Why am I getting blank pages or no images when I send my test to the printer? Download the latest version of Test Generator by selecting the appropriate link located above. Please remember to back-up any tests you may have created.

Alternatively: The Test Generator is a Java-based application. The printing problems reported are known Java problems that most frequently occur on Hewlett Packard printers. If you are having this problem, please try one of the workarounds listed below:

1. Instead of sending your test directly to the printer, first export it to PDF (Adobe Acrobat Format). Then, open the test in Acrobat and print.

2. If you want to make Test Generator print to PDF automatically when you hit the print button, you can change a system setting to do this. In the Data folder of your Test Generator installation, there is a file called "default.props". In this file there is a line that reads: TestGen@PrintToPDF=false

3. If you change this setting to "true", Test Generator will always print to PDF. You can edit this file using Notepad or SimpleText. If you use some other editor, like Word, make sure you save the file as a text-only file. The new line will look like this: TestGen@PrintToPDF=true.
Why are the graphics printing out as black boxes? Open the "readme.txt" file on the CD. It explains how to correct this error by changing a setting in a program file. Otherwise, go to File, Export, Export to PDF and save the file as a PDF file and print it from Adobe Reader.
Why is Test Generator crashing when I choose a book to open? In the Control Panel, there is an icon for Java plug-in. Double click the icon and choose the Cache tab and change the size amount to unlimited. Restart the computer and start Test Generator.
Why is my computer crashing when I exit Test Generator? There is a problem with ATI graphics card drivers and how they run on Windows XP in a Pentium 4 environment. We suggest downloading new drivers. You can do this by visiting the Web site of your computer's manufacturer.
Why am I having problems downloading the state standards into the plan? Make sure you installed the program to the default location listed during the installation process. You can uninstall and then reinstall the program to fix this problem.
Why did I receive a "jre.exe" error when running this program on my Windows XP workstation? Go into "c:/program files/testgen/jre12/bin/" or "c:/program files/testgen/jre117/bin/", depending on the program version, and rename the "symcjit.dll" file as "symcjit.old". Restart the program.
How can I move a test from one computer to another? Copy the ".tgt" file for your test and load it onto the other computer. Note: both computers must have the same book installed in Test Generator. Also, teacher-edited questions will not transfer from one computer to another unless the ".tgb" and ".tgh" files are copied from the Books folder as well. These files can be quite large.
